Detail of the Process
The process of providing a comprehensive drug and alcohol-testing
program consists of a number of key elements. The first of
these is to work with the company to determine their specific
needs related to data reporting and billing. Once these issues
are defined, AWSI provides the necessary training for the
company's supervisors and other key members of management.
Employees are provided educational materials related to drug
abuse and alcohol misuse. At that point, the actual testing
can begin. AWSI coordinates the program from collection of
the urine specimen and/or the breath alcohol test, through
the testing at a certified laboratory, review by a Medical
Review Officer, to the reporting and billing cycles. A Certified
Substance Abuse Program Administrator (C-SAPA) and a staff
of trained specialists oversee the entire program.
Detail of Services
AWSI provides a comprehensive, program that meets the requirements
for government regulated and non-regulated company programs.
A high-speed data transfer network that is accessible through
AWSI's Internet web site links the entire system. The key
components of the process include:
Collection Sites
AWSI has over 8000 facilities, in the United States, available
to collect urine samples. Individual sites are linked through
the AWSI web site to each client. New sites can be linked
to individual clients as they identify facilities where
additional employees are located. Details for each linked
facility are available 24/7 on the AWSI web site. AWSI's
staff monitors these sites and is available to locate additional
sites to meet client needs.
Testing Laboratories
AWSI processes all urine samples through laboratories owned
and operated by Quest Diagnostics Incorporated and/or Laboratory
Corporation of America Holdings. They currently have eleven
(11) laboratories nationwide. All of the laboratories are
certified by the Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS) and overseen by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA). Quest Diagnostics Incorporated
and Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings are the largest
providers of drug testing services in the country and are
recognized for the quality of their service.
Medical Review of Test Results
National Medical Review Offices, Inc. (NMRO) reviews all
test results. NMRO is recognized as the top provider of
Medical Review (MRO) services in the world.
Management of the Drug and Alcohol Testing Program
AWSI provides database management of all drug and alcohol
test results in addition to performing the random selections
required by federally mandated programs. All reports required
by these mandated programs are prepared for each client.
Custom reports can be produced to meet additional specific
client requirements. Many of the commonly required reports
are available on the web site and can be easily accessed
by individual clients. Test results are reported according
to client specific requirements. All records are maintained
by AWSI. The entire management program is overseen by a
Certified Substance Abuse Program Administrator (C-SAPA)
who is available to consult with clients in areas related
to policy procedures, regulatory requirements, and handling
of employee problems and concerns.

Drug and Alcohol Training
AWSI believes in order to successfully establish an effective
Drug and Alcohol prevention strategy the employer must provide
its employees and supervisors with a comprehensive drug abuse
and alcohol misuse education program plus specific training
for all supervisors. The AWSI solution consists of two elements.
The
first element is to provide all supervisors with training
that ensures they have the tools necessary to react to and
control a drug or alcohol crisis (observed use or sale of
drugs or alcohol, erratic behavior, discovery of drug paraphernalia)
situation. The balance of the program, which is the main thrust
of our supervisor training, deals with how to apply the "Principles
of Performance Management" to control drug abuse and
alcohol misuse in the workplace. The program covers the physical,
behavioral, speech, and performance indicators of possible
substance abuse and alcohol misuse and what steps to take
to deal with these issues. In addition to onsite training,
AWSI provides a complete set of training materials to document
behavior patterns, incidents, and poor performance issues.
The package includes forms to assist in documentation.
The
second element is to provide education for the client's employees.
This educational material covers information on common illegal
and misused prescription drugs encountered in the workplace
as well as the dangers of alcohol misuse. The material includes
tests covering the basic issues related to drug abuse and
alcohol misuse and the company policy. By utilizing these
tests, the client can document that each employee not only
received the educational material, but also demonstrated an
understanding of the subject.
Background Screening and Safe Hiring Training
One of the best ways for employers to reduce problems in
their businesses is to cut down on the number of problem employees
they have. One of the most effective ways of avoiding a problem
employee in the first place is to develop a safe hiring program
utilizing pre-employment background screening.
AWSI has developed a series of three educational workshops
to provide training and education for employees charged with
hiring responsibilities. The series is currently available
on line.
The first workshop is entitled; "Who Are You Hiring?
The Legal and Practical Aspects of Conducting Pre-Employment
background Screening on New Job Applicants." This workshop
provides a general introduction to safe hiring through pre-employment
screening. It reviews the advantages of screening, the methods
and tools, the basic legal framework and the mechanics of
setting up and operating a pre-employment screening program.
The second workshop is entitled, "Crime, Criminals and
Human Resources-The Role of Criminal Records in the Hiring
Process." This session covers which criminal records
can be legally obtained and used in the hiring process, applicable
state and federal laws, and how to obtain, interpret and evaluate
criminal records to make employment decisions. It also includes
an outline presentation on the basics of criminal law and
the criminal justice system for HR professionals.
The third workshop is entitled, "Obtaining And Giving
Employment References-A Catch 22." This workshop covers
effective employment reference strategies HR professionals
can utilize despite the difficulties in obtaining information
from past employers. It reviews how to respond to requests
for references from other employers, as well as how to effectively,
and legally, conduct reference checks before hiring. It concludes
with ten easy steps every employer can take immediately to
assist in safer hiring. These steps can be implemented in
spite of the lack of reference information.
